Disability Without Poverty

For the last year it has been my absolute honour to volunteer with a new movement, Disability Without Poverty

There are far too many disabled people living in poverty in Canada. Some say it’s 1.4 million, others say it’s 1.7 million, but with the pandemic, estimates are now above 2 million disabled people living in poverty. Just imagine that. On this pie chart, the green wedge is those who are not disabled. The orange wedge is those who are disabled but not in poverty. But look at the size of that yellow wedge – those who are disabled and in poverty. It’s just far too big.

Pie chart - three quarters represents those not disabled and not in poverty, of the other quarter, one wedge shows the 2 million disabled people in poverty

I will write more on our work and the work of our allies in future posts, but please check out the Disability Without Poverty website, where you can read about the parliamentary e-petition that was signed by nearly 18 thousand people, you can read the many OpEds we have had published, and you can read the results of the Angus Reid poll from July 2021 that tell us we are supported by Canadians in our belief that disabled people should never live in poverty.

Want to hear me speak about it? Register for the talk I am giving for NEADS on Friday February 4th.
